Beautiful Art Deco Houses in Mumbai
Did you know that there is excellent and amazing Art Deco architecture in India? Mumbai (former Bombay) has an impressive collection of Art Deco buildings, which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage. More than 1100 Art Deco buildings are still existing in the city. The most famous buildings in pure and well preserved Art Deco style can be seen on Marine Drive on the southern tip of the city - which is the old town and otherwise characterised of (also excellent and well known) colonial architecture. Emerging in the 1920s and 1930s, these Art Deco houses are mainly residential buildings. They face the ocean and the city‘s largest and popular public beach, which makes the apartments in these historical buildings especially exclusive. There even is an Art Deco cinema with the name Regal, which is still in use. The buildings mostly feature bold, linear designs and ornamentation inspired by machine-age motifs and they still have the original colours. The style reflects a unique cultural fusion and stands as a testament to India’s embrace of modernity during the early 20th century.
