A Masterpiece: The Thonet Swivel Chair with Leaning Function
I am the lucky owner of one of the few original early Thonet swivel chairs with leaning function. It represents a new period in the evolution of functional furnitures made by Thonet Company, which by the time when the chair was produced (est. 1888) already had started mass production of bentwood chairs and other furnitures - which could be found all over Europe. Both in private homes such as in public buildings. The plain but elegant chair "Nr 14" could be seen in almost every cafe and restaurant in Europe. The Thonet company was founded by German-Austrian carpenter Michael Thonet who actually revolutionized furniture design by inventing the technique of bentwood craftsmanship in the mid 1800s. Around the late 1800s, as work environments began to modernize and the interest in ergonomic office chairs grew, Thonet responded with a swivel chair that combined both comfort an elegance. The early models featured only a rotating seat. A new mechanism - first unveiled at the 1889 Paris World’s Fair - combined four‑star base swivel mechanism and a delicate tilting (leaning) back funktion - an early exploration of what we now consider dynamic seating…ideal for typists, clerks, and office workers who would be sitting down during long working hours. The leaning function was a major advancement as it allowed the backrest to respond to the sitter’s movements, supporting posture changes and reducing fatigue over long periods of sitting. This ergonomic leap anticipated many of the features we now consider standard in modern office chairs. Thonet’s furniture designs stood out not only for their function but also for their form. Their comfortable chairs combined simplicity and elegance. Early models crafted from bentwood, later even with tubular steel, combined with wood or leather. The most famous models were created thanks to Thonet’s collaborations with renowned designers such as Marcel Breuer, earlier professor in the School of Bauhaus. The Thonet swivel chair with leaning function remains an iconic piece—valued for its historical significance, timeless design, and pioneering role in making seating both functional and human-centered. When I bought the chair many years ago, I was told that this very model was the „US version“ of the the chair. Reach out please in case you know more about Thonet´s production for the US market and maybe even the produktion number of my chair.
