VOLTA NY 2011
VOLTA NY 2011 was one of the standout satellite fairs of New York’s Armory Arts Week, held at 7 West 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan, directly across from the Empire State Building. The fair brought together 83 galleries from 23 countries and 45 cities, continuing VOLTA’s distinctive curatorial model of presenting a single artist per gallery. This format encouraged visitors to engage more deeply with individual artistic practices and created an atmosphere compared to a series of studio visits rather than a conventional fair. The 2011 edition showcased a broad range of emerging and mid-career contemporary artists working across painting, sculpture, photography, installation, video, and new media. Critics praised the fair’s focused and intellectually engaging presentations, highlighting projects by artists such as Elizabeth Subrin, Sinta Werner, and Joyce Hinterding, whose works explored themes of memory, perception, technology, and scientific inquiry. Alongside the exhibitions, VOLTA hosted conversations, screenings, and collaborative programs connected to The Armory Show, reinforcing its reputation as a platform for discovery in contemporary art.
