The garden surrounding Warsaw’s Palace Krasińskich is a beautiful green oasis. Alive with bursting colors of carefully selected flowers that change with the seasons. But it’s also a living tapestry of Polish history and resilience, newly accessible after the palace reopened last year following extensive revitalization. Visitors are now welcomed not only by the Baroque opulence of the palace but also by a park where original details and stories have been meticulously revived. On a personal note: Growing up in Warsaw, I never discovered—nor even heard much about—this treasure of a garden. Visiting it now, 20 years later, makes me proud as a former Warsaw local, rediscovering a gem that many locals today might still miss. Founded in 1676 alongside the palace, Krasiński Garden was Warsaw’s largest park for many decades and is a rare surviving example of the “entre cour et jardin” principle, inspired by Versailles. It is created based on Baroque layout, with geometrical flowerbeds, alleys, and lush greenery surroundings. Through wars, partitions and occupation, the garden was sadly a battleground too many times (for example in the 1830 November Uprising), but later serving as a sanctuary for locals. Restored Originals: Historical benches: Many original benches designed by 19th-century Warsaw gardener Franciszek Szanior were salvaged and renewed; 80 faithful replicas were crafted where the originals were lost. Revived arabesque flowerbeds: Opposite the palace entrance, an arabesque-shaped flowerbed, which is true to the historic design, now blooms seasonally in vivid colors, celebrating the artistry once prized in the court gardens. Baroque fountain axis: The garden’s central axis and aligned Baroque flowerbeds reflect the original 17th-century plan. Heritage living on: Warsaw continues to transform, with many landmarks still awaiting restoration after the turmoil of war and the communist era. The Palace Krasińskich garden now stands as a testament to what historical research and stewardship can achieve. With its beautiful benches and classical flowerbeds, the garden offers a real experience and a glimpse into Warsaw’s living history.
