Portugal's protected landscapes stretch across a breathtaking variety of terrain, from the dramatic Cliffs of the Algarve coastline to the dense Forests of the interior. The country's network of national Parks safeguards some of Europe's most biodiverse ecosystems, while the Arouca Geopark a UNESCO-recognised site draws visitors eager to witness geological wonders millions of years in the making. Nestled between rolling hills, the Valley of the Douro unfolds like a living canvas, its terraced vineyards and riverbanks sheltering rare wildlife under careful environmental Reserve designations. Along Portugal's Atlantic-facing coast, tidal Estuaries and Salt Marsh habitats form vital nurseries for migratory birds and juvenile marine species. The Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve, one of the most important wetland corridors in Western Europe, exemplifies how Wetland conservation has become central to the country's environmental policy. These brackish transition zones connect inland river systems to the open sea, creating a mosaic of habitats that support hundreds of species of flora and fauna throughout the year. In the rugged north and centre of the country, the Massif of Serra da Estrela anchors the longest Mountain Range on the Portuguese mainland, its high plateaus blanketed in glacial lakes and hardy alpine vegetation. Surrounding lower elevations give way to ancient Forest corridors, where oak and pine have been managed for centuries under traditional land-use systems that predate modern conservation law. Together, these landscapes cliffs, marshes, estuaries, mountains, and forests form an interconnected mosaic that reflects Portugal's deep and enduring commitment to preserving its natural heritage.
