Porto Cartoon World Festival
Porto Cartoon World Festival, held in Sintra in 2014, was one of the most celebrated editions of this prestigious international cartoon and caricature competition, drawing submissions from artists across the globe. Sintra, a town already renowned for its romantic palaces, mystical forests, and UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, provided a fittingly enchanting backdrop for an event dedicated to the wit and sharp observation that define great cartoon art. The festival brought together thousands of works spanning editorial cartoons, caricature, and humor illustration, showcasing the remarkable diversity of graphic storytelling traditions from different cultures and political contexts. On the Porto Cartoon, Georges Wolinski — the French cartoonist later tragically killed in the Charlie Hebdo massacre of January 2015 — served as president of the PortoCartoon international jury for several years. The PortoCartoon trophy itself was designed by the celebrated Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. The festival was directed by Luís Humberto Marcos, and prize-winning cartoonists attending came from countries including Russia, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, and Canada.
