Pictoplasma on Tour 2010
Pictoplasma is a curatorial organization founded in Berlin in 1999, dedicated to investigating the art and impact of adventurous figurative representation across creative genres and cultures. It pushes forward character-driven visuals and storytelling across illustration, animation, arts, design, gaming, and emerging media, connecting pioneering creatives and industries through international conferences, educational programs, publications, institutional exhibitions, and a global community network. Now in its 22nd edition, it has grown into the world's preeminent gathering for anyone who works with characters. In 2010, Parsons The New School for Design presented Pictoplasma NYC at Tishman Auditorium, celebrating the artistic creation of character design, held as part of Illustration Week, an annual programming series across New York City. The event was organized by Pictoplasma founders and curators Lars Denicke and Peter Thaler, together with Steven Guarnaccia, chair of Illustration at Parsons. Among the speakers were Luke Ramsey (a Canadian illustrator and fine artist known for continuous pen-on-paper work set in natural landscapes) and Fluorescent Hill (Montreal-based animators Johanne Ste-Marie and Mark Lomond, known for music videos and short films). Australian design collective Rinzen, New York-based designer Craig Redman (known for his fashion-icon character Darcel), Berlin-based illustrator Rilla Alexander, and Nathan Jurevicius — creator of the beloved Scarygirl — also presented their work.
