pART Project NYC
The pART Project NYC, held in November 2012, was a unique charitable art initiative that brought together nearly one hundred artists who transformed bicycle components into original works of art. Organized by SRAM and benefiting World Bicycle Relief, the project expanded significantly from previous editions, featuring both sculptural works and, for the first time, collage-based creations. The resulting artworks were presented in a juried exhibition in New York City. They culminated in a live auction on November 29, 2012, with all proceeds supporting efforts to provide bicycles to communities in developing countries. Beyond its fundraising goals, pART Project NYC demonstrated how industrial design and contemporary art could intersect in unexpected ways. Artists reimagined chains, gears, derailleurs, and other bicycle parts as expressive media, producing works ranging from intricate abstractions to imaginative sculptural forms. The exhibition highlighted the creative potential of everyday objects while emphasizing the social impact of cycling as a tool for mobility, education, and economic opportunity. Through this combination of artistic innovation and philanthropy, pART Project NYC became a notable example of art being used to inspire both aesthetic appreciation and positive global change
