The 2004 Luminale was the second edition of Frankfurt's biennial festival of light culture, held in parallel with the prestigious Light+Building trade fair. Launched in 2002 by Messe Frankfurt in conjunction with the Light and Building Trade Fair, Luminale was created to showcase the potential of light and promote sustainable urban development. The 2004 edition featured prominent international artists, including Brian Eno with his Quiet Club installation at the Galliera, and Olafur Eliasson with his 360° Room for All Colours at the Schirn Kunsthalle. These works transformed well-known Frankfurt venues into immersive environments, blending technology, art, and architecture in ways that were still relatively novel for a public festival at the time. The festival was organized as a navigable light walk across the city, and free shuttle buses ran every 10 minutes until midnight, connecting all the illuminated sites in the city center and encouraging visitors to explore multiple installations in a single evening. The route took in a range of venues from the main train station bathed in shifting colors to cultural landmarks along the riverbank, including the German Film and Architecture museums. The 2004 edition helped establish Luminale's reputation as a serious platform for light art and set the tone for the increasingly ambitious editions that would follow throughout the decade.
