Carris is Lisbon's historic public transport operator, responsible for running the city's iconic tram (eléctrico) and bus network. Founded in 1872, it is one of the oldest urban transport companies in the Iberian Peninsula. The company's most famous asset is its fleet of vintage yellow trams, which winds through Lisbon's hilly historic neighbourhoods of Alfama, Graça, and Estrela. These century-old vehicles many still running on the original narrow-gauge tracks have become symbols of Lisbon itself, as much a cultural landmark as a mode of transport. Portugal's tram heritage extends beyond Lisbon, though the capital remains its most vibrant home. Porto once had an extensive tram network, and today preserves a small but charming system along the Douro riverfront, operated as both a tourist attraction and a working service. Sintra also maintains a historic tram line connecting the town to the coast at Praia das Maçãs. Across Portugal, in Braga and Coimbra, there is a growing appreciation for preserving these electric tramways.
