The Hanky Panky cocktail is a classic drink that represents the 1920s. You may have heard of “the roaring twenties” expression? It was also an era of cocktail innovation and the rise of female bartenders. This iconic cocktail is attributed to Ada "Coley" Coleman, the head bartender at the American Bar in London's Savoy Hotel. According to Coleman's own story, published in The People newspaper in 1925: "The late Charles Hawtrey... was one of the best judges of cocktails that I knew. Some years ago, when he was overworking, he used to come into the bar and say, 'Coley, I am tired. Give me something with a bit of punch in it.' It was for him that I spent hours experimenting until I had invented a new cocktail. The next time he came in, I told him I had a new drink for him. He sipped it, and, draining the glass, he said, 'By Jove! That is the real hanky-panky!' And Hanky-Panky it has been called ever since." The Hanky Panky is a variation of the sweet martini, combining 3 ingredients: oz (45 ml) gin oz (45 ml) sweet vermouth 2 dashes Fernet-Branca This cocktail is simultaneously sweet, bitter, complex and sophisticated and it is delicious as a digestive and tastes best with some almonds or olives (the salty flavours marry nicely with the bitter taste of Fernet-Franca). Test the bartender next time if they know how to mix it or try out yourself at home!
