From Selfie to Self-Expression, presented at the Saatchi Gallery in 2017, examined the evolution of self-representation from classical painted self-portraits to the digital selfie. Organized in partnership with Huawei, the exhibition brought together works by artists such as Rembrandt, Vincent van Gogh, Cindy Sherman, Tracey Emin, Juno Calypso, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer, and Gavin Turk, placing historical self-portraiture in dialogue with contemporary social media culture. Through interactive installations, photography, video, and digital artworks, the exhibition argued that the desire to construct and share one’s image is not a new phenomenon but a continuation of a centuries-old artistic tradition. A dedicated section showcased photographs created with smartphone cameras, highlighting the growing role of mobile devices as artistic tools. By connecting Old Master self-portraits with contemporary digital practices, From Selfie to Self-Expression demonstrated how technologies change. Still, the human impulse toward self-expression and self-documentation remains remarkably constant.
