Free Range is the annual season of graduate art and design shows held at the iconic Brick Lane venue in Shoreditch, East London. Now in its 17th annual season in 2017, Free Range billed itself as the largest undergraduate degree show open to the public, showcasing an extensive and diverse cross-section of work from the UK's emerging artists and creatives from leading art colleges and universities, with over 3,000 exhibitors from more than 50 universities and over 100 courses. Each photography week culminates in the FR Awards, where a panel of industry experts judge participants to award a "Best in Show," with winners receiving funding towards their own solo exhibition and personal mentorship. The Old Truman Brewery also ran its broader October photography programme, PHOTOBLOCK, which complemented Free Range. PHOTOBLOCK brought together a rich mix of events, including the prestigious AOP Awards described as the most respected competition for professional photographers in the creative sector alongside the PHOTOMASTERS MA graduate showcase, the D&AD Next Photographer Award in partnership with Getty Images, the British Press Photographers' Association exhibition, and a Photo Book London fair, all offering free entry to the public.
