Display design in London during 2016–2017 was strongly influenced by the convergence of retail innovation, visual merchandising, and experiential design. Major industry events such as the Retail Design Expo at Olympia London and the VM & Display Show in Islington brought together designers, retailers, architects, and branding specialists to explore new approaches to customer engagement through store environments, window displays, digital signage, lighting, and interactive installations. These exhibitions highlighted how physical retail spaces were evolving in response to e-commerce, with increasing emphasis on immersive experiences, storytelling, and innovative visual presentation. At the same time, London’s broader design culture provided fertile ground for experimentation in display and exhibition design. The London Design Festival, London Design Fair, and the newly reopened Design Museum showcased installations that blurred the boundaries between art, architecture, lighting, and commercial display. Projects such as Flynn Talbot’s Reflection Room at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the lighting-focused darc room exhibition demonstrated how display design could transform space through light, materiality, and sensory experience. These events reflected London's position as an international center for contemporary design, where display design was increasingly viewed not merely as a commercial tool but as a creative discipline in its own right.
