Danish artist Anna Ancher (1859-1935) is celebrated for her mastery of light and colour, often depicting sunlit interiors, domestic scenes, and everyday life in her hometown She was born in Skagen, a small fishing village in the very north of Denmark. Her family owned a hotel there. During the late 19th century, the village became home to many artists who came to be known as the Skagen Painters. Anna Ancher wanted to portray real lives as lived, a departure from the traditions of prior paintings which portrayed regal and rich families in all their finery. She frequently captured quiet moments of work and reflection. Her use of natural light, particularly the way it filters through windows and illuminates rooms, is a defining feature of her style.
