André Carrilho caricaturist
André Carrilho is one of Portugal's most celebrated illustrators and caricaturists, born in Lisbon in 1977. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Lisbon and later at the School of Visual Arts in New York, an experience that sharpened his already distinctive visual language. His work is characterized by bold, expressive distortions, masterful use of line, and a sharp satirical wit that cuts to the heart of its subjects. He has become particularly renowned for his caricatures of political figures, musicians, actors, and cultural icons, bringing them to life with a style that is at once grotesque, elegant, and deeply human. Carrilho's work has earned him international recognition, appearing in some of the world's most prestigious publications, including The New Yorker, The New York Times, Time, Newsweek, and Der Spiegel, among many others. He has received numerous awards throughout his career, cementing his reputation as one of the finest editorial illustrators of his generation. Beyond editorial work, he has also ventured into animation, book illustration, and exhibition projects. In Portugal, he is widely regarded as a national artistic treasure — a voice of visual commentary who reflects the world back at us with both humor and incisive intelligence.
