250th anniversary - the semiquincentennial
Boston is at the center of the nation's Semiquincentennial, marking 250 years since the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776. As the 250th anniversary of the Declaration, the Semiquincentennial is being organized nationally by America250, established in 2016, alongside a White House Task Force created in 2025. Since the city was the stage for so many pivotal Revolutionary moments, Massachusetts has taken the lead with Massachusetts 250, a statewide initiative honoring both famous milestones and lesser-known stories from the fight for independence. The commemorations actually stretch back to 2025, since 2025-2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the Siege of Boston, an 11-month standoff that began after the first shots at Lexington and Concord, with the National Parks of Boston marking milestones like the anniversaries of Bunker Hill and Paul Revere's ride along the way. The celebrations build toward a massive climax around Independence Day 2026. Boston Harborfest ran July 2-4, 2026, featuring a kick-off ceremony with historical reenactors and the 215th Army Band, a fireworks display over the harbor, and the annual reading of the Declaration of Independence from the balcony of the Old State House — the same spot where Bostonians first heard those words in 1776. The festivities culminate with the official Massachusetts 250 Signature Event at the Charles River Esplanade, featuring the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. Beyond the big civic events, the city has seen historic reenactments, museum exhibits, and Tall Ships throughout the year, and local hotels have gotten in on the spirit too, with packages like Beacon Hill's XV Beacon offering a "Celebrate the 250th Anniversary" package with a 1776-themed treat and a Boston history guide.
