In July 2016, the newly expanded Tate Modern attracted international attention following the opening of its new extension, the Switch House, later renamed the Blavatnik Building. Designed by the Swiss architectural firm Herzog & de Meuron, the ten-story structure added significant gallery space and public areas to the museum, allowing Tate Modern to display more of its permanent collection and accommodate large-scale contemporary installations. The extension transformed the former power station into one of the world's largest museums dedicated to modern and contemporary art, strengthening London's position as a global cultural center. The new galleries introduced innovative curatorial approaches that moved beyond traditional art-historical categories, presenting works through themes such as performance, media, identity, and social change. Visitors in July 2016 could explore an expanded selection of international artists from diverse backgrounds, reflecting Tate Modern's commitment to a more global understanding of contemporary art. The opening of the extension was widely celebrated not only as an architectural achievement but also as a milestone in the museum's evolution, providing new opportunities for artists and audiences to engage with contemporary culture in dynamic ways.
