Bloomberg New Contemporaries
The 2017 edition of Bloomberg New Contemporaries continued one of the United Kingdom’s most significant platforms for emerging artists, showcasing work selected from recent graduates and final-year students across British art schools. Chosen by artists Caroline Achaintre, Elizabeth Price, and George Shaw, the exhibition featured 47 artists working across painting, sculpture, installation, photography, film, and performance. The project highlighted the diversity of contemporary artistic practice in the UK, offering a snapshot of the concerns, materials, and experimental approaches shaping a new generation of artists. While the 2017 exhibition launched at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead before traveling to London, it maintained a close connection to the Institute of Contemporary Arts, which has historically hosted numerous editions of New Contemporaries and played a crucial role in supporting emerging artistic talent. The exhibition explored themes such as identity, memory, social change, technology, and community, reflecting the cultural and political atmosphere of the period. By bringing together artists at the beginning of their careers, Bloomberg New Contemporaries reinforced its longstanding reputation as a barometer of future developments in contemporary British art.
