Daydreaming with Kubrick & Film Poster Exhibition
Daydreaming with Stanley Kubrick was an exhibition of art inspired by the master filmmaker, which opened at Somerset House in London in July 2016. Curated by Mo'Wax and UNKLE founder, artist and DJ James Lavelle, it featured over 50 visual artists, filmmakers and musicians who were invited to respond to a film, scene, character or theme from the Kubrick archives. Highlights included a collaboration between James Lavelle and contemporary musicians and composers to produce a soundtrack to some of the show's installations, creating a multi-disciplinary experience for visitors, as well as a large-scale floor vinyl by artist duo Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin covering nearly 200 square metres of Somerset House, replicating the carpet pattern from the hotel in The Shining. The film poster dimension of the exhibition was one of its most celebrated elements. Philip Castle, the airbrush artist behind some of the most iconic posters for Kubrick's films, contributed several works — including a never-used poster design for Full Metal Jacket, a lightbox portrait of Alex from A Clockwork Orange, and a new work depicting Kubrick's portrait surrounded by elements from his films. The exhibition's own visual identity, designed around a set of graphic eyes referencing characters from Kubrick's films, was also typographically inspired by the distinctive marketing material used across his filmography — ensuring that the legacy of Kubrick's poster art ran as a thread throughout the entire show, from the walls of Somerset House to its own promotional campaign.
