Art from Latin America Today was presented at the South London Gallery in 2016 as the London edition of the Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative exhibition Under the Same Sun. Curated by Pablo León de la Barra, the exhibition brought together works by more than forty artists from across Latin America, exploring how contemporary art responds to shared experiences of colonial legacies, political upheaval, economic inequality, and rapid social change. Through painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, and performance, the exhibition revealed the diversity of artistic voices emerging from the region while highlighting common concerns that transcend national borders. Rather than presenting Latin America as a single cultural identity, the exhibition emphasized the complexity and plurality of contemporary artistic practice. Works by artists such as Gabriel Orozco, Alfredo Jaar, Tania Bruguera, Marta Minujín, and Amalia Pica addressed themes of participation, political activism, memory, migration, and alternative visions of the future. By bringing these artists together in London, the exhibition challenged conventional narratives about Latin American art and demonstrated its central role in global contemporary culture. The show was widely praised for its ambitious scope and for introducing British audiences to a rich spectrum of artistic perspectives from across the continent.
