Palace Ludovice Boutique Hotel
The Palácio Ludovice Boutique Hotel stands as one of Lisbon's most historically significant buildings, designed by architect João Federico Ludovice — the mastermind behind the National Palace of Mafra — as his own family residence, completed in 1747. Its purely Baroque architecture is a testament to the grandeur of 18th-century design, and the building's remarkable structural resilience was put to the ultimate test when it survived the catastrophic Great Earthquake of 1755 intact, while much of the city crumbled around it. That survival proved to be more than mere good fortune — the palace's robust construction served as a direct source of inspiration for the Pombaline style, the earthquake-resistant architectural approach adopted in the sweeping reconstruction of Lisbon that followed the disaster. Today, the building has been reimagined as a boutique hotel that layers contemporary interior design and Art Déco accents over its storied Baroque bones, creating an atmosphere where centuries of history and modern luxury coexist in one of the Portuguese capital's most storied addresses.
