The theater district clustered around Broadway in Midtown Manhattan is one of the most iconic and storied entertainment landscapes in the world. Stretching roughly from West 41st to West 54th Street, the area is home to 41 official Broadway theaters defined as venues with 500 or more seats including legendary houses such as the Shubert Theatre (1913), the Lyceum Theatre (1903, the oldest continuously operating Broadway theater), the Majestic Theatre (home to the long-running Phantom of the Opera), and the ornate New Amsterdam Theatre, restored by Disney in the 1990s. Many of these buildings are architectural gems in their own right, featuring Beaux-Arts, neoclassical, and early 20th-century design elements, with elaborately decorated facades, grand lobbies, and richly appointed interiors. The district has survived economic downturns, the decline of Times Square in the 1970s, and the COVID-19 shutdown, always reemerging as a cultural powerhouse.
