Seeing the Light by Andrew Whyte
Andrew Whyte works with the darkness of night as his backdrop, creating original photographs using cutting-edge equipment, innovative techniques, and what he calls "the oldest resource of all: time." By removing the split-second constraints of daytime photography, he has the freedom to work across a range of styles on location — from creating abstract light art to capturing the majesty of the night sky. A commercial photographer based on the south coast of England, Whyte has developed a narrow field of specialism within long exposure night photography, working to both practice the art and demystify the science through presentations, workshops, and written features. Among his most celebrated contributions to the genre is "The Dome," a viral light painting technique he first revealed on Flickr in May 2010 that puzzled and inspired thousands across professions, from scientists and IT consultants to artists and light enthusiasts alike. His national and international reputation has grown on the back of his mastery of night sky photography, night-time car photography, and light painting — though to many he is perhaps equally well known through his alter-ego "The Legographer."
