In February 2015, the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes (SNBA) in Lisbon hosted the exhibition Beleza e Tragédia em Luís Dourdil Centenário, inaugurated on 12 February 2015, as part of a broader programme of centenary commemorations honouring one of the most important Portuguese painters of the latter half of the twentieth century. Born in Coimbra on 8 November 1914, Luís Dourdil was a self-taught painter who privileged the human figure as a constant theme throughout his work, though from the 1960s onward he moved towards abstraction, maintaining throughout his career a close dialogue between drawing and painting. His work is characterised by a veiled figuration with abstract tendencies, developed across multiple planes with transparency effects in which chromatic and luminous elements never fully dissolve the presence of the human figure. The SNBA exhibition formed part of a rich centenary season that also included shows at the Palácio Pimenta, the Galeria Municipal dos Paços do Concelho, and the Museu Municipal de Coimbra, collectively affirming Dourdil's enduring legacy across Portuguese cultural institutions.
