Hotel Christiania Teater
Hotel Christiania Teater is one of Oslo's most storied landmarks, with a history stretching back over a century. Inaugurated in 1918 on Stortingsgata, the Nordic Neo-Renaissance building was designed by architect Henry Fearnley Coll in collaboration with Danish architect Hack Kampmann, and opened as Opera Comique. On this site, world-renowned opera singer Kirsten Flagstad began her career. In 1921, it was converted into the Casino, a theatre hosting revue shows, before becoming a cinema in 1928 and suffering serious damage in a fire in 1931. During the German occupation, it operated as a propaganda cinema, and from 1945 to 1985 it housed Det Norske Teateret. After renovations in 1985, it reopened as Filmteatret, a venue for quality cinema, before being renamed Christiania Teater in 2006 and ultimately converted into a hotel. Today, Hotel Christiania Teater is part of Strawberry, operating as an independent hotel within the Nordic Hotels & Resorts collection, where historical soul meets modern comfort. Throughout the hotel, guests will find a rich art collection featuring everything from modern to classical works, along with a concept floor called "Behind the Curtain," featuring 10 unique rooms inspired by the many professions of the theatre world. The hotel's restaurant Teatro, offers dining in three acts, alongside a bar with an extensive wine list, and the historic theatre in the building still hosts live productions throughout the year. The building has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 2015, making it one of the few hotels in Oslo where guests truly sleep inside a piece of the city's cultural heritage.
