Porfírio Pardal Monteiro – Architect of Lisbon
"Porfírio Pardal Monteiro – Arquitecto de Lisboa" was a major retrospective exhibition held at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, in Lisbon, opening on 10 April 2015 as one of the highlights of that year's Lisbon Week. Curated by Ana Tostões and João Pardal Monteiro, the exhibition paid tribute to the life and work of the Portuguese architect through original drawings, personal objects, furniture, and an extensive photographic survey of his built legacy. It was the first retrospective dedicated to Porfírio Pardal Monteiro in over 70 years, making it a long-overdue act of recognition for one of the most consequential architects of twentieth-century Portugal, and running until 9 June 2015. The exhibition sought to reveal to visitors that Pardal Monteiro had profoundly shaped the city that Lisbon residents know every day, yet often without knowing who was behind it. His fingerprints are everywhere: the Instituto Nacional de Estatística, the Instituto Superior Técnico, the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil, the Diário de Notícias building, the maritime stations of Alcântara and Rocha do Conde de Óbidos, and the Cais do Sodré railway station are all landmarks tied to his vision — places where people study, read, write, and travel. The venue itself was deeply fitting: the Biblioteca Nacional building was the last major project of Porfírio Pardal Monteiro, continued after his death by his nephew António Pardal Monteiro, and inaugurated in 1969 — making the exhibition a homecoming of sorts, with the architect's legacy celebrated within walls he had himself conceived.
