Gardens and parks of Madrid
Madrid is home to some of Europe's most stunning urban gardens and parks, blending royal heritage with natural beauty. The Retiro Park (Parque del Buen Retiro), once a royal retreat, is the city's green heart — a sprawling 350-acre oasis featuring manicured gardens, a serene boating lake, ornate fountains, and the iconic Crystal Palace. Equally impressive are the Royal Botanic Garden (Real Jardín Botánico), founded in the 18th century, which houses thousands of plant species from around the world, and the formal gardens of the Royal Palace, whose geometric French-style layout offers sweeping views over the Manzanares River valley. Beyond these landmarks, Madrid's garden culture extends into quieter, less-touristed corners of the city. The Jardines de Sabatini, laid out in a neoclassical style north of the Royal Palace, provide a peaceful escape with sculpted hedgerows and reflecting pools. The Campo del Moro, hidden behind the palace, surprises visitors with its lush English-style landscaping and peacocks wandering freely among the trees. Further afield, the Capricho Park in the Alameda de Osuna neighborhood is perhaps the city's best-kept secret — an 18th-century romantic garden with artificial lakes, a labyrinth, and neoclassical follies that feel entirely removed from the bustle of the Spanish capital.
