The Society of Illustrators' Annual Student Scholarship
The Society of Illustrators' Annual Student Scholarship Exhibition is widely regarded as the most prestigious student illustration competition in the country. Each year's exhibition features over three hundred works chosen from thousands of entries submitted by professors of college-level illustration and animation students across the United States and Canada. A jury of professional peers — including illustrators and art directors — selects the most outstanding works based on the quality of technique, concept, and skill of medium used. The 2012 exhibition followed this format, with accepted works displayed in the galleries of the Museum of American Illustration at the Society's headquarters on East 63rd Street in New York City. Among the recognized students from California College of the Arts in 2012 were Monica Garwood, who received a $500 scholarship in memory of former illustration chair Dugald Stermer; Maggie Olson; Sara Sydnor; Jenna Trost, who received a $1,000 scholarship in honor of John Klammer; and Jonathan Stagnaro. All students with accepted work were featured in a full-color exhibition catalog, and the event also honored Distinguished Educators in the Arts — a prestigious award presented to educators who have made a strong impact on illustration as both teachers and artists.
