Utopies entomologiques Amiens, France
Les Utopies Entomologiques is a series of sculptural works situated in the heart of the Hortillonnages ecosystem in Amiens. The work provides nesting sites for insects and is made from traditional ceramic combined with ceramic 3D printing. It is designed as an environment not only for insects but also for living plants, decomposing plants, and reserves of water. Unlike conventional public sculpture — typically a solid, rectilinear, enclosed monolith — these ceramics are carved with galleries, tunnels, corridors, and balconies, with baroque, biomorphic designs that evoke fantastical or utopian architecture. The project sits at the intersection of ecology, natural science, and contemporary fabrication. Drawing inspiration from nature's living construction models — such as honeycomb cells, spider webs, plant fractals, and geodesic mineral formations — the sculptures help support biodiversity by giving insects a safe place to live, especially in urban or agricultural areas where natural habitats are scarce. The work raises the possibility of an inter-species architecture inclusive of non-humans, connecting different living things that occupy the same space, and uses the latest 3D modeling experiments inspired by biomimicry and mathematical models created by living things.
