António Cruz - "A Drawing of Light" NeoRealist at Gulbenkian

António Cruz (1907–1983) was a Porto-born painter and sculptor who rose to prominence as one of Portugal's most celebrated watercolourists, a technique that had largely fallen out of fashion in twentieth-century Portuguese art. Associated with the Neo-Realist movement, he became renowned for his deeply felt depictions of his native city, capturing with singular mastery the soft, luminous mist and atmospheric light that define Porto. He was immortalised by filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira in the 1956 documentary O Pintor e a Cidade (The Painter and the City), a testament to the intimate bond between the artist and his urban subject. Critics considered him unmatched in his ability to render the city's distinctive glow on paper. In July 2015, the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon hosted a major retrospective titled António Cruz na Fundação Gulbenkian, organised at the initiative of the Cooperativa Árvore and curated by Laura Soutinho, bringing together 86 works — 80 watercolours and 6 oil paintings, several of which had never previously been exhibited. The show, titled Um Desenho de Luz ("A Drawing of Light"), ran through October 2015 and formed part of a national circuit. The exhibition was accompanied by the launch of a dedicated publication, and came eight years after an earlier anthological show at the Museu Nacional Soares dos Reis in Porto, reaffirming Cruz's enduring place in the canon of Portuguese fine art.
