José de Almada Negreiros - “The modernist of the modernists”
José de Almada Negreiros (1893–1970) was one of the most dynamic and influential figures of Portuguese modernism, often called “the modernist of the modernists” for his relentless advocacy of artistic renewal. Born on April 7, 1893, in São Tomé (then a Portuguese colony), he moved to Lisbon as a child, where he would become a central force in the avant-garde scene. He first gained prominence in 1915 through his involvement with the Orpheu group, alongside writers such as Fernando Pessoa and Mário de Sá-Carneiro. Almada was not only a painter but also a writer, performer, and theorist, embodying the multidisciplinary spirit of modernism and pushing Portuguese culture toward a bold, experimental future. Throughout his career, Almada Negreiros embraced a wide range of artistic forms, including painting, drawing, murals, tapestry, dance, and literature. His visual work often combined geometric abstraction with figurative elements, reflecting influences from Cubism and Futurism while maintaining a highly personal and expressive style. He is also remembered for his provocative manifestos, such as the “Ultimatum Futurista às Gerações Portuguesas do Século XX,” in which he called for a radical break from conservative traditions. Among his most notable works are his large-scale public murals and stained-glass projects, which helped bring modernist aesthetics into everyday public spaces in Portugal. Almada Negreiros died on June 15, 1970, in Lisbon, leaving behind a legacy as one of Portugal’s greatest modernist innovators. His lifelong commitment to artistic experimentation and cultural transformation made him a key figure not only in Portuguese art but also in the broader European modernist movement. Today, he is celebrated for his visionary approach and for helping to redefine what it meant to be a modern artist in Portugal, bridging disciplines and challenging conventions with energy and originality.
