Ceramics - Querubim Lapa
Querubim Lapa is a Portuguese ceramist whose studio practice emerged in the mid‑20th century, fusing traditional hand‑building methods with a modernist sculptural sensibility. Over a long career, he exhibited nationally (and in some international venues), taught and mentored younger potters, and placed works in museum and private collections, helping to raise the profile of ceramics within Portuguese contemporary art. Querubim Lapa is celebrated for ceramics that bridge sculpture and functional pottery, marrying expressive, often biomorphic forms with refined surface treatment. His works favor hand‑built techniques—coil and slab construction—over industrial production, and are distinguished by richly layered glazes, textured surfaces and a spontaneous, painterly approach to color. Many pieces balance utility and monumentality, turning bowls, vases and plates into objects that read as small sculptures, with motifs that sometimes reference the natural world and Portuguese craft traditions. In a museum context, Lapa’s ceramics invite close looking: the tactile marks of the maker, the interplay of matte and glossy glazes, and subtle color transitions reveal a technical command and an experimental spirit. His work is important for its contribution to 20th‑century Portuguese ceramics, influencing generations of potters who sought to combine artisanal technique with contemporary artistic concerns. Displayed alongside drawings and studies, Lapa’s pieces underscore the dialogue between form, surface and the hand that made them.
