Mårbacka, Selma Lagerlöfs Home
Mårbacka is a manor located in Värmland, Sweden. It is famously known as the birthplace and residence of the renowned author and Nobel Price Winner Selma Lagerlöf. The manor was originally built in the 18th century as a farmhouse and Sema Lagerlöf´s father was forced to sell it when he faced financial difficulties when Selma was young. She bought the house back from the price money of the Nobel Price and expanded and renovated the buildings. After Selmas death in 1940, Mårbacka became not only a cultural landmark but also a symbol of Swedish literary heritage. The beautiful garden around the main house is always home to peacocks since these birds played a symbolic role in many of her stories and even in stories she heard as a child, when she got inspired to write herself.
