Drama outside Stockholm´s Dramaten
The Royal Dramatic Theatre, or in Sweden known as Dramaten, is an architectural landmark in Stockholm's city just near the waterfront. It’s a magnificent building designed by architect Fredrik Lilljekvist, and inaugurated in 1908. Lilljekvist's design for Dramaten was inspired by neo-classicism and Art Nouveau styles. The exterior of Dramaten is adorned with a wealth of ornamental features. Eg Dionysian Relief is the long relief on the front of the building, depicting a festival honoring the Greek god Dionysus In keeping with the Art Nouveau style, many the ornamental details include motifs from Swedish flora, such as roses, pine branches, and laurel leaves. You can see them carved into the marble facade, creating a harmonious blend with the rest of the architecture. Quite some drama and very suitable for a dramatic theatre, wouldn’t you agree?
