40 years of Portugal´s National Library´s Art
40 Anos de Arte, presented at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal in Lisbon in 2015, celebrated four decades since 1975 of artistic activity and cultural programming associated with one of Portugal’s most important public institutions. The exhibition brought together works by Portuguese painters, sculptors, printmakers, illustrators, and photographers held in the library’s collections, highlighting the National Library's role not only as a guardian of books and manuscripts but also as a repository of modern and contemporary artistic heritage. Through a broad selection of works, visitors could trace the evolution of Portuguese visual culture from the late twentieth century into the new millennium. The exhibition also emphasized the close relationship between art, publishing, and graphic culture. Many of the featured artists had collaborated with writers, poets, and publishers, demonstrating how the visual arts have enriched Portugal’s literary and intellectual life. By presenting paintings, drawings, prints, artist books, and archival materials side by side, 40 Anos de Arte offered a rich overview of the creative dialogue between artistic expression and the National Library's documentary mission, reaffirming its importance as a center for research, preservation, and cultural dissemination in Lisbon.
